Scarborough won the toss and elected to play up the slope on a fine day at Woodhead. With little wind and a firm surface conditions were good for a hard fought encounter between two equally matched sides. A large crowd had gathered boosted by over 150 former players attending the clubs reunion lunch.
In the early exchanges Brods enjoyed the territorial advantage and with some good possession applied all the early pressure. Strong running by Alex Murphy and Cam Wroot put the home team on the front foot and from a good position in the Scarborough 22 the ball was moved left and Loketi Manu showed strength and pace to pierce the Scarborough defence and touch down between the posts. Matty Briggs converted to give the home side an early lead and the young scrum half featured regularly in the ensuing exchanges as his pace off the mark regularly set the Scalby boys problems in defence.
Brods continued to dominate the first half and added to their lead when they won a lineout close to the Scarborough try line. The visitors did not engage hoping to be awarded a penalty however their delay and the Brods awareness meant that when they did commit the Hipperholme boys had an easy task in driving over the line with Cameron Wroot the scorer. A further conversion from the touchline extended the score to 14-0 however Scarborough were looking dangerous on the break with strong running in midfield.
With the minutes ticking down to half time Scarbs were pressing in the left hand corner and Jake Lyon forced his way over to register the visitors first points of the afternoon. With a missed conversion the score was 14-5 at the break and clearly the home side would face a difficult challenge in the second half.
Indeed the second period was dominated by the visitors as they camped in the Brods half for long periods. The Hipperholme boys had to work overtime in defence and on several occasions it was their spirit and whole hearted scrambling defence which kept them in the game.
Against the run of play in a rare visit to the visitors territory Brods extended their lead with a penalty by Matty Briggs. Scarborough were reduced to 13 men with a yellow card for gamesmanship rapidly followed by a red for a high tackle. The visitors however maintained their momentum and when Tom Ratcliffe broke through out wide Harrison was in support and the scrum half ran in under the posts. Ratcliffe added the extras and the game was in the balance 17-12.
In the closing seconds Scarborough had their chance as their full back broke out of defence down the left , Marshall was in support however inexplicably he tripped, the ball was lost and the game was gone.
Another thrilling game with the young Brods outfit showing great character against a top four side. Next week they travel to Bridlington for another challenging encounter.
