25 - 17

(HT 0-0)

Old Brodleians RUFC
Dronfield 25 – 17 Old Brods

On their first visit to the Gosforth Fields sports complex Brods kicked off up the hill with a strong cross wind slightly favouring home team. The ground was sticky and with a wet ball handling was not to be easy . Early pressure from the home team was defended well by the Woodhead boys however the home team sustained their attack and were rewarded following several close range forward drives as they would pick and go to score from close range .With the conversion they held a 7-0 lead after 20 minutes play.

The score was extended to 10-0 when the home side were awarded a kickable penalty however Brods were on the scoreboard themselves when Matty Briggs kicked a penalty from some 30 metres out .Brods were getting into the game and earned a good position in Dronfield territory when Tom Ashen broke down the left however the inside pass went to ground . At the ensuing scrum Dronfield were penalised . Brods kicked to the corner and the Brods lineout worked well. Several efforts from Ryan Harris, Lee Imolek and Cam Wroot went close .

With Dronfield under intense pressure further penalties were awarded and two yellow cards reduced Dronfield to thirteen men. Brods handling in attack let them down however the increasingly desperate Dronfield defenders conceded yet another penalty and yellow card for a high tackle. Inevitably Brods sustained the pressure and the ball was eventually moved right to Cameron Wroot who touched down in the right hand corner . A great conversion from the touchline from Matty Briggs resulted in the sides being level 10-10 at half time.

With the restart kick off from the home team being dropped Brods were immediately under pressure in their own 22 .Dronfield sustained that pressure for a good ten minutes denying Brods any possession camping deep in their territory and playing the clock down on their yellow cards. The pressure eventually told and with the home team restored to 15 on the field of play and Brods reduced to 14 eventually Dronfield forced their way over the line from close range 17-10 after 10 minutes of the second half . The home team were worth their lead as play continued and they dominated possession and territory . With Brods defending their line Loketi Manu received a yellow card and the resulting penalty took Dronfield to the Brods line which led to a lineout drive and a further try . The conversion was missed bur Dronfield now held a 22-10 lead.

Brods heads did not drop and having worked a good position and a lineout won close to the Dronfield line the Brods pack gathered themselves and drove for the home try line . Elliot Craven scored from the back of the driving maul and with another conversion from Matty Briggs the Woodhead boys may have been back in the game with a losing bonus point however from the restart they conceded a further penalty and with the goal kicked in the closing seconds Dronfield were the victors 25-17
