Brods maintained their recent improved form with another good performance at Selby on Saturday. The young front five provided solid foundations with a good supply of possession for their back line whose confidence appears to be growing weekly. The back row forwards were as always industrious winning their fair share of turnovers and not allowing their hosts time on the ball to force errors and win turnover ball.
The opening exchanges saw Selby pressing the Brods line however the Woodhead boys turned over possession to break out of defence and with the award of two consecutive penalties. Matty Briggs took his opportunity to register the opening score with a penalty goal from under the posts. From the restart the home side were clearly keen to move the ball at pace and their backs ran strongly which was stretching the Brods midfield defence and indeed drew a penalty from which they levelled the score number 10 kicker.
As the game developed the Brods scrum was clearly in the ascendency but unfortunately Matty Briggs had to leave the field of play with a dead leg sustained when he bravely took the ball in a mid-air collision. Brods momentum was building and the Woodhead boys were camped in the home 22 when the Selby winger intercepted a wayward pass and sprinted the length of the field to touch down under the Brods post and with the conversion held a 10-3 lead.
The Hipperholme boys response was immediate and they took the game to their hosts with a penalty to the corner and a powerful forward drive set put the Selby boys on the back foot from which Brods Tongan centre Loketi Manu took full advantage and his strong running took him over the line for Brods first try of the game. Manu stepped up to convert his own try and the scores were level 10-10.
Selby immediately took the game back to their visitors however when Brods' pressure in defence forced an error from which Tom Ashen took advantage and his kick and chase downfield took the ball deep into Selby territory once more. Brods counter rucking turned the ball over just outside the Selby 22 and Manu was alert to pick up the ball and more strong running took him to the Selby line for the second try wide on the right. His conversion was successful and Brods held a 17-10 lead.
In the closing seconds of the first half Brods kicked to the corner following a penalty and from the lineout the forward pack overpowered their hosts to drive over and Elliott Craven as ever touched down 22-10.
In the second half Selby continued to run the ball at every opportunity and the Brods responded in the same style with Adam Sutcliffe and Tom Ashen combining well down the left flank. Brods had to defend for periods as the Selby pace stretched the Hipperholme boys defence however that defence was good and turned over the ball in front of their posts.
Strong running in midfield gave Brods momentum and with jimmy Hodkinson being alert to take a quick tap penalty Brods earned a good position 10 metres from the Selby line. Brods dominant scrum moved forward to cross the line and Cam Wroot touched down for the bonus point try. Loketi Manu's conversion stretched the Brods lead to 29-10.
Selby continued to compete taking the game once more deep into Brods territory however the Woodhead boys defence was good and were able to clear their lines with more turnover ball. Brods extended their lead with another excellent score. James Millington led the charge breaking the defensive line and his offload to the supporting Jimmy Hodkinson was perfectly timed and Jimmy touched down under the posts which, with the conversion, extended the score to 36-10.
As ever Selby continued to play with adventure and pace however their ambition was thwarted when Manu intercepted and ran fully 70 metres to score his hat trick try and once more kick his own conversion. 43-10.
Brods power earned a final score for them when Joe Kafatolu and Michael Briggs combined to score in the right hand corner leaving a trail of defenders in their wake. 48-10.
